How Does Acupuncture Work in Pets?
If you’ve ever had acupuncture yourself—or know someone who has—you may already be familiar with its calming, healing effects. But did you know that acupuncture can also benefit pets? More and more pet parents are turning to veterinary acupuncture to support their animals through pain, illness, and even cancer treatment. But how exactly does it work?
The Basics of Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that involves placing very fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate healing. These points lie along pathways called meridians, which correspond to internal organs and physiological systems. The goal is to restore balance and improve the flow of energy (or “Qi”) throughout the body.
While acupuncture has roots in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM), modern scientific studies have shown that it can:
Stimulate nerves
Increase blood circulation
Release natural pain-relieving chemicals (endorphins)
Reduce inflammation
Support immune function
In other words, acupuncture works by tapping into the body’s natural ability to heal and regulate itself.
What Conditions Can Acupuncture Help?
Veterinary acupuncture can be beneficial for a wide range of conditions, including:
Pain (arthritis, back pain, post-surgical recovery)
Neurologic issues (intervertebral disc disease, nerve injuries)
Cancer support (managing nausea, fatigue, and discomfort)
Digestive disorders (vomiting, diarrhea, inappetence)
Respiratory problems (asthma, allergies)
Palliative and end-of-life care (improving comfort and relaxation)
At Kindred Path Vet, acupuncture is often used as part of an integrative treatment plan—working alongside conventional medicine, not instead of it.
What Is a Treatment Like?
Most pets tolerate acupuncture very well—even the wiggly ones! The needles are extremely thin (about the width of a hair), and many animals become so relaxed during treatment that they fall asleep.
A typical session lasts about 10–30 minutes, and we always work at your pet’s pace. Depending on the condition, results may be seen right away or gradually over several sessions.
Is Acupuncture Safe?
Yes—when performed by a trained veterinarian, acupuncture is very safe. Dr. Crystal Garnett is a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA) with advanced training in both conventional oncology and integrative medicine. Each treatment is customized to your pet’s specific needs, temperament, and health status.
